Step 1–pass the written test and vision test If you are 16, take it thru your school’s drivers ed class, 50 multi-choice questions based on the NJ drivers manual, available in English and Spanish 16 year olds MUST COMPLETE 6 hours of driving school behind-the-wheel training and then they get permit for supervised driving until 17 years old or 6 months, whichever is later If you are 17+ go to any dmv and take a 30-question multi-choice test; driving school is not required, and then get 6 months supervised driving vision test done at dmv Step 2–get permit [see above] Step 3–road test then you have license
