John Hampden was born in 1594. He became an MP in 1621, and in 1626 he helped to prepare the charges against the Duke of Buckingham..The next year, having refused to pay his proportion of the general loan whcih Charles I attempted to raise on his own authority, he was imprisoned, and in 1634, when Charles levied a tax for outfitting the navy (ship money) he again refused to pay his share, and was prosecuted before the Court of Exchequer (1637). Seven of the 12 judges found against him, but the prosecution made Hampden the most popular man in england. he was MP for Buckinghamshire, both in the Short and the Long Parliaments. he was one of the five members whose attempted seizure by Charles I in 1642 precipitated the Civil War. When hostilities broke out he raised a regiment of infantry for the Parliamentary Army, and demonstrated bravery and generalship at the battles of Edgehill and Reading, but was killed at Thame in 1643.
