What are the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests?
In response to “No Child Left Behind,” Virginia embraced Standards of Learning (SOL) in math, science, English, history and social studies. Additionally, Grades 5, 8, and 11 have SOL in technology. Each spring, students in grades 3, 5, 8, and high school take SOL tests to determine their knowledge base. High School students must pass each subject SOL to graduate. Since SOL are state requirements, each school district must apply the same standards, however they have some flexibility in setting test dates.
