What are the standard pH and chlorine levels in swimming pools?
Chlorine should average 1.5 on a daily basis. When you shock your pool, you should be getting chlorine levels over 3.0 PPM. Swimming in a pool with chlorine over 3.0 reading wont necessarily hurt you but it will have the potential to bleach clothing, cause dry skin, and possible eye irritation. When shocking your pool your pool levels should return to normal within 12-24 hours. Ideally if and when you shock your pool you want to do it at night so that the levels will return to a swimmable level the next morning. As for PH levels. The water (tears) your body generates for your eyes has a PH level of approximately 7.4 So you want to keep a PH reading between 7.2 and 7.6 so that your eyes do not get irritated and red. A Reading too low under 7.0 will have an Acidic effect, which can damage pool equipment such as pool heaters etc, and a high or alkaline reading
