Presuming you start wit a young horse who is already used to being handled (ie, can catch, tie up, attend to feet etc *sigh* what I’d give….) You proceed like this. 1. Teach horse to lunge, starting with leading around the arena with a head collar/lunging cavenson and lunge line and gradually encouraging them to move out and away from you. This teaches the horse to listen to voice aids, respect your space and move away from stimuli. 2. You introduce the horse to tack, starting with the bridle (although still lunging with the head collar) and progressing to the saddle, all the while keeping up with the lunging. 3. Introduce the horse to LIGHT side reins and then start long reining. This teaches the horse to move freely and confidently in front and gets him used to feeling “legs” on his sides and moving away from the reins on his sides and turning from the bit. 4.
