Volatile Organic Chemicals are airborne toxins that give off gas from paint, either during application or while the paint is curing. These chemicals, once inhaled, into the body can slowly cause damage to immune system, organs and or brain function. Some modern paint can give off gas for 4 years or more. This is why green paint is the safe option.
