What are the South Beach Diet principles?
The South Beach Diet was developed by Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist based in Miami, Florida, whose motivation was to improve his heart-disease patients’ cholesterol and insulin levels. Often compared to the Atkins Diet, with which it shares similar diet-restrictions, the South Beach Diet differs from many other fad diets in that it is based on principles backed by scientific proof. Not strictly low-carb or low-fat, the diet-plan instead exhorts followers to eat the right kinds of carbohydrates and fats. The South Beach Diet differs most notably from the Atkins diet in its restriction of fat intake. Whereas the Atkins diet permitted inclusion of dietary fats in large quantities, but few carbohydrates, the South Beach Diet takes a more balanced approach, restricting fat intake while also recommending inclusion of mainly complex carbohydrates.
