What are the sources of mercury releases nationally?
It is important to consider mercury from a national and international perspective because sources of mercury are located throughout the world. Once released, mercury can travel in the atmosphere thousands of miles before being deposited on the land or water. The top sources of mercury in the US are boilers (predominately coal-fired power plants, other coal-fired boilers and municipal waste combustors) and manufacturing (dominated by chloralkali chlorine production plants and cement kilns). Area sources include fluorescent lamp breakage and general laboratory use. Source: Office of Air Quality Planning & Standards and Office of Research and Development. December 1997.
