thomas satz – the myth of mental illness – is it depression which can be easily managed or an expression of dissatisfactio in hte way that elderly people are ‘managed’ some social anthropolgy stuff about how other cultures deal with elders. We get annoyed/depressed through lack of role and standing in society – Queen Eliz the 2nd is probably less depressed than Prince Charles. I live in sheltered accommodation and we are all old dears no matter what we were when working. Also because of fear of the death process and dementia which is becoming very risky – other (shamanic?) cultures do this better less sanitisation of the dying process. We seem as a society to feel the need to ‘manage’ elderly people without trying to understand what insights they may have to offer. We are seen as moaners rather than having the insight that being disengaged from your culture gives – Just a negative view of age that it can give nothing towards the culture juts packaged waiting to die or to make final lov
