What are the similarities and differences between STAD and TGT cooperative learning teams?
Student Teams-Achievement Divisions (STAD) and Teams-Games-Tournaments (TGT) are both involve heterogeneous cooperative learning groups where there is some element of competition. In STAD, students work as teams to prepare for quizzes, which they take individually. Each student can earn points for their team by comparing their current score to their base score. In TGT, students again prepare as teams but instead of taking written tests, students of similar ability meet weekly at a tournament table to try to win points for their team. Winners are bumped up to a higher ability table each week to keep the competition fair. TGT may not be as effective with lower-achieving students.
