What are the signs of latex allergy?
Allergic reactions to latex may take different forms. Common allergy symptoms, which occur after exposure to latex, include: • Hives • Itching • Sneezing • Stuffy nose • Runny nose • Irritated nose and eyes • Red, swollen eyes • Tearing • Wheezing • Coughing • Difficulty breathing • Dizziness • Light-headedness • Trouble swallowing • Swelling/tightness of the throat • Hoarseness A more severe allergic reaction may take the form of a type of shock called anaphylactic shock, which can occur during surgery. Anaphylactic shock is characterized by a fall in blood pressure and respiratory distress. Discuss any reactions your child has had to latex with his doctor. Tell the doctor if your child has had any of the common allergy symptoms listed above during anesthesia, surgery, dental visits or at any time after exposure to rubber materials.
