What are the Signs of Effective Feeding?
The following are signs that your baby is receiving enough milk once he is latched onto the breast correctly: * Your baby should be feeding with a suckle-pause-swallow rhythm. * Your baby may suckle quickly at first to bring the milk out of the nipple. * A definite pause (movement of his chin as he opens his mouth to the maximum while suckling) occurs when your baby receives milk in substantial quantities since this means that his mouth is filling up with milk. * Your baby opens his mouth wide, keeps it open for a few seconds, and closes it again just before opening it once more. * A baby who is not receiving enough milk will present a fast sucking pattern without any of the above wide-open pauses (he simply opens and closes his mouth).
