What are the signs of Asperger’s Syndrome?
People with Asperger’s have difficulties with socialising, communication and behaviour. Individuals with Asperger’s tend to ignore other people, and don’t seem to understand others’ needs, thoughts or feelings. They don’t make as much eye contact and don’t make as much use of facial expressions when communicating. They tend to prefer solitary play to playing with other children and seem to get on best with understanding adults. They can find it more difficult than other children to form friendships. A person with Asperger’s tends to find communication more difficult and may take longer to learn to speak. Use of language may also be more formal, literal and precise than most people. A phrase such as ‘She bit my head off’ may be frightening or disturbing to a child with Asperger’s, so to help them understand you, keep your sentences short, clear, and literal. Alternatively you may need to explain what certain phrases mean to other people and explain that other people do just use them, ho
