What are the signs and symptoms of rabies in a human?
The first symptoms of rabies may be very similar to those of the flu including general weakness or discomfort, fever, or headache. These symptoms may last for days. • It may take several weeeks (usually 2-8 weeks), months, or up to one year to get sick after exposure. • Early symptoms include • fever, headaches, fatigue, general anxiety or worry, pain, tingling or numbness at the site of the bite. • Later symptoms include • trouble swallowing, paralysis, seizure, coma and eventual death (100% fatal) Once a person begins to exhibit signs of the disease, survival is rare. To date less than 10 documented cases of human survival from clinical rabies have been reported and only two have not had a history of pre- or postexposure prophylaxis.
