What are the signs and symptoms of gastroenteritis?
Gastroenteritis causes diarrhoea and vomiting. Some people also develop a high temperature and fever and might have tummy pains. Most cases are not serious and you will recover quickly once the infection is out of your system – often within 24 hours. The biggest complication of gastroenteritis is dehydration from diarrhoea. Young children and the elderly are most at risk of this. Symptoms of diarrhoea include: • Tiredness • Dizziness • Headaches • Nausea • Muscle cramps • Dry mouth • Fast heart beat • Not needing to pass urine In developing countries diarrhoea is a big health risk and deaths from the gastroenteritis are common because people do not have access to medical care.
