What are the signs and symptoms of fever?
Your child’s signs and symptoms will depend upon what has caused the fever. Your child may have one or more of the following: • Body temperature that is higher than usual. A body temperature that drops lower than usual (for no known reason) may be a sign of infection in newborns. • Chills, sweating or shivering. • Not hungry or thirsty. Your child may lose body fluid through his skin and breathing while he has a fever. If he does not drink enough liquids, your child may become dehydrated (loses too much body fluid). • Nausea (upset stomach) and vomiting (throwing up). • Skin rash. • Very tired or fussy. • Seizures or acting confused. Your child may act very confused or have febrile seizures if his fever is rising very quickly. Febrile seizures happen more often in children under five years old than they do in older children. Febrile seizures are not common, and usually do not harm your child. If your child has a febrile seizure, talk to his caregiver right away. The caregiver may want
