What are the signs and symptoms of exercise-induced asthma?
Signs and symptoms of EIA can appear while you exercise, or a few minutes after you are done. Symptoms usually last for 30 to 60 minutes, but can also last for days. Athletes may have symptoms of EIA for only short periods of time. Their symptoms may be relieved quicker and they can get back to physical activities faster. You may have one or more of the following: • Physical signs and symptoms: • Coughing during exercise or a few hours after. Your cough may be dry, or it may bring up mucus from your lungs. • Headache. • Sore and cramping muscles. • Sore throat. • Shortness of breath or wheezing (high-pitched sound when breathing). • Tight or painful feeling in your chest. • Performance problems: • Avoiding certain activities or decreased interest in doing heavy physical activities. • Feeling out of shape. • Getting tired easily and not being able to exercise as long as you used to. • Trouble doing activities during certain seasons. • Trouble keeping up with your friends or peers during
