What are the signs and symptoms of a nervous breakdown?
Symptoms of a nervous breakdown can be diverse – ranging from extreme anxiety, hyperactivity, inability to sleep, and agitation to loss of ability to feel pleasure, eat or sleep, and an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. A person experiencing a nervous breakdown may behave inappropriately, lose interest in his or her surroundings, and ignore personal hygiene. Some people experiencing a mental breakdown even have psychotic symptoms such as delusions or hallucinations – although this isn’t common. An individual having a mental breakdown may avoid all contact with people – even close friends and will have difficulty carrying out the normal activities people do on a day-to-day basis such as getting dressed, bathing, and eating. They usually require very close monitoring or around the clock care until they start to recover.
