What are the side effects?
In the largest study, the most common side effect affected only a small minority of people and included the following: nausea (10%), headache (7%), dizziness (4%), fatigue (4%), insomnia (3%), anxiety (2%), and sleepiness (2%). These side effects were usually mild and of short duration. When used as a treatment for alcoholism, the side effects have caused 5-10% of people studied to discontinue use of the medication. For most patients, side effects are mild or of brief duration. One potential side effect is that the medication can have an adverse effect on the liver. We have found in most cases that continuing drinking is much more harmful to the liver than Naltrexone. Blood tests of liver function are performed prior to the onset of treatment and periodically during treatment to determine whether medication should be started and whether it should be discontinued if the relatively rare side effect of liver toxicity is taking place. However, taking this medication is much less dangerous
Children’s research on more than 4,800 patients from 2004 to 2008 showed that nitrous oxide has few side effects. Just over five percent of patients sedated with nitrous oxide experienced minor side effects. The most common were vomiting (2.5%) or nausea (2%). In comparison, up to 12 percent of patients have been reported to experience side effects from the oral sedative previously used for many of these procedures.
All medications – even ones you buy without a prescription – have the potential for side effects. Arthritis medications are no exception. It is impossible to list all of the side effects of arthritis medications because different drugs cause different side effects and different people react differently to medications. However, some of the more common side effects of the different categories of medications used to treat arthritis are: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – Edema (swelling of the feet) heartburn, stomach upset and stomach ulcers and possibly increased risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke. Cortiocosteroids – Cataracts, elevated blood fats and blood sugar levels, increased appetite and bone loss. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) – Stomach upset and increased susceptibility to infection. Other side effects vary by drug. Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Others report discomfort in the gums, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing. If any of these side effects continue you should go to your dentist.
