Researchers are still discovering new side effects of hydroquinone. So far, hydroquinone has been associated with risks of liver, kidney and thyroid damage, and with leukemia. It may be dangerous to fetuses and nursing babies. It can actually darken your skin if you are exposed to enough sunlight, or to artificial ultraviolet light such as sunlamps. Allergic reactions, burning and reddening of the skin also have been reported.
