What are the ships’ mottos?
A12. The Prospective Commanding Officer and ship’s crew develop mottos that are part of the ship’s crest or in some cases mottos may be assigned at ship naming. The following mottos are in place: · LPD 17, San Antonio: “Never Retreat, Never Surrender” Refers to the Alamo’s commander, Lt Col. William Barrett Travis writing to the People of Texas “I shall never surrender or retreat…Victory or death!” · LPD 18, New Orleans: “Victory From the Sea” represents the ship’s mission to conduct naval expeditionary warfare operations from the sea. · LPD 19, Mesa Verde: “Courage Teamwork Tradition” reflects the courage, teamwork and tradition of the Ancestral Puebloans who lived and built the cliff dwellings in the Mesa Verde National Park – similar to the attributes displayed by the 21st Century Navy/Marine Corps team. · LPD 21, New York: “Never Forget” honors the courage and commitment of those who died and those who responded at the tragic attack on the World Trade Center Towers on 11 September
