What are the scientific applications included in the PRM?
Pediatric Regenerative Medicine includes a broad range of applications based on these strategies and technologies: • Transplantation of cells to form new tissue in the transplant site. • Implantation of bioartificial tissues constructed in vitro. • Induction of regeneration in vivo from healthy tissues adjacent to an injury. • Reconstruction of tissue and organ functions. Researchers are increasingly aware of the complexity of the molecular machinery that underlies seemingly simple biological events. One approach to tackle the complexity inherent in the emerging field of Regenerative Medicine is to foster and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration. With the growing integration of basic and applied research at SickKids, an excellent opportunity now exists to develop a strong focus in translational research, the hallmark feature of Regenerative Medicine, in children who are unique in their tissue healing, remodelling, and immune responses, and especially their regenerative potential.
