What are the rules regarding personal scooters?
Residents are cautioned about the use of motorized scooters in their neighborhoods. First and foremost, motorized scooters are not allowed on a sidewalk or bike path. Moreover, in general motorized scooters may not be operated on a public street because, unlike mopeds, they lack safety features such as headlights, horns and do not meet certain licensing requirements. The minimum age at which a moped license can be issued is 15. The moped must also meet certain safety requirements mandated by the Michigan Secretary of State. Residents who believe motorized scooters are a problem in their neighborhood may call the Sterling Heights Police Departments non-emergency number at 446-2800 and speak to a police officer.
