What are the rules for Catholics and cremation?

0

In 1963 an Instruction from the Holy Office lifted the ban on cremation for Roman Catholics, but it was not until 1997 that the Vatican allowed funeral Masses with the cremated remains present. The Church still prefers that the cremation follow the Mass, but this is no longer a requirement. The sanctity of the body requires that the body be placed in a ‘worthy vessel’ and not be scattered. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave, placed in a mausoleum or columbarium, or buried at sea. Since the application of these guidelines may vary from parish to parish, it is always best to check with the priest to get his views. Back to Top 16.
