What are the rules for building a fence?
You can build a fence up to your property line, no taller than 6 feet high in a side or rear yard and not more than 42 inches (3 ½ feet) in a front yard. The better looking side of the fence must face your neighbors of the street. If you are on a corner lot or at an alley, there may be visibility issues and the fence might have to be moved back from the corner. The City approved a historic preservation ordinance in 1984 that set standards and rules for homes or businesses to become landmarks or historic districts. They must be at least 50 years old and be associated with an important local person or event, or designed by a noted architect or have architectural merit.
