What are the Royal Marines?
The Royal Marines is the UK’s commando force. It’s an amphibious infantry, equipped to fight on land or at sea, and is a small but powerful part of the Royal Navy. It’s an elite force so it is highly competitive – particularly if you want to be an officer. Once you have finished training, you can choose an area to specialise in. Officers can specialise in heavy weapons, intelligence, landing craft, mountain leadership, physical training and sports, piloting, signals, staff duties, the Special Boat Service, or weapons training. Commandos can choose one of the following specialisms: aircrewman; armoured support (Viking); assault engineer; chef; clerk; combat intelligence; communications technician; driver; heavy weapons (air defence, anti-tank or mortar); information systems; landing craft; medical assistant; military police; mountain leader; reconnaissance operator; swimmer; canoeist; signals; telecommunications technician; or yeoman of signals.
