What are the roles of the different “belts”?
Green Belts are employees who have been trained in the principles and basic methods of Six Sigma. In many companies they spend between 10% and 30% of their time leading improvement projects within their own functional area. Having proved their abilities in several projects, Green Belts may receive further training and become Black Belts. Black Belts are high-potential employees who have been selected to lead cross-functional teams in process improvement projects. Typically 1% of employees in the organisation work as full time Black Belts for two or three years. A small percentage of Black Belts may later achieve the status of Master Black Belt, but most will advance into management. Black Belt training is given over a total of to 4 to 5 weeks, normally divided into 1-week or 2-week modules. Master Black Belts are the most experienced and accomplished practitioners of Six Sigma.
