What are the risks of traditional tubal ligation?
Dr. Rudo: Immediately following the procedure, you may experience menstrual-like cramps and discharge, mild nausea or vomiting, pain in the incision, and bruising around the incision. Major complications, such as infections, bowel injuries, bleeding, burns, or complications from anesthesia, occur in about 2% of women undergoing minimally invasive surgery and 6% of women undergoing an open procedure. Damage to internal organs and bleeding may require additional surgery. For women who get pregnant following a sterilization procedure, ectopic pregnancy occurs more often.
