What are the risks of starting an alpaca business?
With most things in life, there are risks involved in most new ventures. However, the alpaca industry has a very nice advantage… alpaca insurance !! At a very low cost (which is also tax deductible), alpacas can be insured against theft and mortality. Honestly, that’s what cinched the deal for us. It made our first alpaca purchase much less painful knowing if we lost an animal, we’d get 100% of our money back. Not sure about you, but we don’t know of any kind of stock or investment that offers that kind of reassurance. So what can go wrong? We know a lot of successful breeders, but also know a few who failed. Why? Because they didn’t do their homework and didn’t learn the basics of the alpaca industry. They failed because they didn’t realize there was more to being successful than having pretty animals to sell. They fell in love with the first set of big brown eyes who followed them around the pasture, then bred her to a lower quality male because they weren’t taught about the import
