What are the risks involved with breast reduction? Are the risks greater for teens?
I had a breast reduction 11 years ago. There are risks to any operation performed under a general anaesthetic, but the risks particularly highlighted to me were: Depending on how large the breasts are and how much needs removing, they may need to remove your nipples and re-attach them once they have finished. Depending on the amount of time the nipple is away from the blood supply, there is a risk it will not re-attach itself and will become gangrenous. This is what happened to me on my right breast. I lost my nipple altogether and endured further surgery for skin grafting. You will have scarring, no matter how good your surgeon is. It is an inevitable consequence of having a breast reduction operation. The scars fade to white over time but I still have some parts of my scars which are red and I am 11 years down the line from the surgery.
