What are the risks & downsides?
With any surgery there is a risk of death. Specific risks for death vary from report to report and some say it is around 1 in 200, others say 1 in a thousand, and there seems to be no consensus on this. There is a risk this surgery could leave you struggling with lifelong diahorrea and nutrition issues. Later risks could include bowel obstructions as well as cancer. These percentages are reasonably low, but need considering. We do not yet know what happens over the very long term when you run undiluted bile down the intestine, for example. Furthermore a complication is a big deal. It affects everything. Consider things so carefully before commiting – do loads of research into the complications. Please know that we are not exempt from the unexpected. I went through all the worst DS case historys I could find and yes, I did have some sleepless nights.
