Risk factors for exertional heat illness can be internal such as dehydration or over hydration, inadequate heat acclimatization, salt deficiency and a history of heat illness. External risk factors include activity intensity, duration, frequency of rest breaks and the adequacy hydration when heat and humidity are high.
