What Are the Rights Implicated in Violence against Women?
Under the UN Women’s Convention, the rights and freedoms implicated in violence against women are: • the right to life; • the right not to be subject to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment; • the right to equal protection according to humanitarian norms in times of international or internal armed conflict; • the right to liberty and security of person; • the right to equal protection under the law; • the right to equality in the family; • the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health; and • the right to just and favorable conditions of work. State Response and State Responsibility International law sets out four levels of obligation for governments who signed and ratified human rights agreements.
