What are the requirements to adopt a child from India?
CARA—the Indian government adoption authority—and the local Indian courts have implemented a preference to match the youngest, healthiest children with families living in India. Next preference is given to couples of Indian origin living abroad who hold at least one current Indian passport or OCI card. Families who do not have evidence of current Indian citizenship are eligible to adopt older children or infants with possible medical concerns. Parents must be at least 30 years of age, have no more than three children living in their home and have been married at least three years. The combined age of both parents must be no greater than 90. If you’re interested in an older child, or a child of any age (including infants) with special needs, these requirements might not apply—except the three-year marriage requirement.
