What are the requirements of a designated smoking room (DSR) for a restaurant, dinner theatre or banquet hall?
Restaurants, dinner theatres, banquet halls and food courts have the option of building one DSR that is no larger than 25 per cent of the seating area available for patrons. The DSR must have a prescribed sign, available from the Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga By-law Departments, posted on the door warning about the dangers of tobacco smoke. In addition, a DSR shall be: 1. Inaccessible by the public for thoroughfare to the washrooms, food service areas or entrances; 2. Completely enclosed on all sides by solid floor-to-ceiling walls, windows or solid floor-to-ceiling partitions; 3. Equipped with a separate ventilation system that: (a) maintains a minimum ventilation rate of thirty (30) litres per second per person, based on the maximum occupancy; (b) is ventilated directly to the outside air; (c) is exhausted at a rate of at least one hundred and ten per cent (110%) of supply; and (d) no less than three (3) metres away from any air intake or opening.
