What are the requirements for countries reporting FMD to the OIE?
FMD is notifiable to the OIE. The following criteria are followed in determining what events are considered significant and require immediate notification by a member country to the OIE within 24 hours for any listed diseases, including FMD: • First time an OIE-listed disease or infection is identified in a country or zone/compartment • The first time there is a re-occurrence of a listed disease or infection following a report by the member state indicating that the previous outbreak(s) was resolved • The first occurrence of a new strain of a pathogen of a listed disease in a country or zone/compartment • The sudden and unexpected increase in morbidity or mortality caused by an existing listed disease; • An emerging disease with significant morbidity/mortality or zoonotic potential • Evidence of a change in the epidemiology of a listed disease (e.g. host range, pathogenicity, strain of causative pathogen), in particular if there is a zoonotic impact Q: Why is it important for OIE membe
