What are the requirements for admission?
If you are a freshman applicant, you must have completed the highest level of secondary education in your country of residence. We look for a strong secondary academic program with courses in math, natural sciences, and English, (or, if English is the language of instruction, another language). If you have attended any college or university after graduating from secondary school you must apply as a transfer student. Successful applicants have usually completed 24 credits with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or 15 credits with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
The application form, $50 application fee, statement of purpose, resume, two letters of recommendation (three for PhD), all official transcripts (undergraduate and graduate), and official GRE scores (for all students instructed in English and for all PhD candidates). International applicants whose native language is not English and who do not hold any higher education degree from a U.S.-accredited college or institution are also required to submit results of the TOEFL or the IELTS. All required materials must be submitted before your file is reviewed.
The process of admission is a two-step process. Students must first apply directly to the University Graduate Admissions Office. Once accepted by Graduate Admissions, the student’s application is forwarded to the history department. The student should first obtain an application from the University Graduate Admissions Office and supply transcripts as requested. Students’ GRE scores will also be received by the University Graduate Admission Office. Once the student is admitted to the university as a post-baccalaureate student, the student’s file will be forwarded to the history department. Students should send an application essay of two to three typed pages outlining their preparation for graduate studies in history and their reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in history, directly to the graduate coordinator in the history department. Students should also have three letters of recommendation sent directly to the graduate coordinator in the history department.
