What are the rehearsal schedules like?
Rehearsal schedules vary for different shows. Generally, rehearsals start about 4 to 6 weeks before the show opens. Rehearsals are usually held Monday through Friday from 7 to 10 p.m., but the director will determine the schedule based on everyone’s availability. Musicals almost always rehearse for six weeks – usually starting with a week dedicated to learning the music. Plays tend more to 4 or 5-week rehearsal schedules. Directors try to plan the schedule so that only the actors in the scene being rehearsed are called. Actors with smaller roles won’t necessarily have to attend every rehearsal. At auditions, the directors will want to know about any conflicts so they can plan the schedule accordingly.
