I suggest that you use an image no smaller than 300 dpi. However, there are “tricks” that can be used, (should your image have been taken on a low-quality setting for your camera) that are quite good at smoothing out any pixilation. However, starting with a higher resolution image will obviously offer more customization opportunities for your photo.
