What are the reasons for the fall of Singapore in 1942?
The preparations for the defense of Singapore were thoroughly inadequate and poorly planned. There was am assumption by the British that Singapore would not fall and that it was a case of Fortress Singapore. They were advised by the Australians that the causeway between Singapore and Malaya could be crossed in a thousand places but the warning went unheeded. As the guns in Singapore pointed out to sea a naval by Japan was possible but unlikely. The Japanese that marched on Singapore were outnumber three to one but they were better led and moved rapidly. They had done their homework and knew Singapore’s weaknesses.
