Hi. Most vegans were vegetarians to start with. The main reasons why I would suggest it are: Firstly, it is a logical progression. If you are trying to step away from things that are doing harm to the animals and the environment, then consuming milk is not harmless. You cannot get milk without artificially making cows pregnant and having calves. The calves are then an ‘unwanted by-product’ or the meat industry and end up as veal or pet food. Secondly, the commercial production of eggs require that all male chicks (who will not make any eggs) be destroyed as they cannot afford to feed them. This is true for battery eggs, free range, organic… only females lay eggs. Male chicks are usually gassed with carbon dioxide, sometimes they go into mechanical crushers. They may be sold as food for other animals. Chickens that lay eggs do not live so long. Most eggs are produced by battery hens in small cages in large sheds.
