New asphalt pavement has a deep black color, but the oxidation process begins immediately causing the pavement to develop a gray color over time. As the oxidation eats deeper into the pavement, the smaller aggregate material (sand and gravel) is released exposing the larger gravel and the pavement becomes rough and deteriorates the asphalt.
