What are the reasons behind the strike?
The issue is about the increment of salaries of lecturers. The protesters also want some of the universities to be autonomous. The federal government has gone a long way to resolve the strike but the agreement was rejected. And so the Federal government backed off. We are made to understand that the lecturers wanted about 110 % increment of salaries. That is to say somebody who was receiving FCFA 100,000 wants to earn FCFA 210,000 monthly. The federal government increased the salaries by 40 % initially but the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU refused the offer.
