What are the qualities of a good boatman?
A thirst for alcohol! No, just kidding. I think the most important thing is to be confident in the surf and to be able to help somebody out no matter what the situation. We’re all trained in CPR, first aid, and stuff like that. On a daily basis, you just want to be helpful to guests and show them a good time in the water. How’s the pay? The pay? You can’t beat it. I stay on the best island in the planet for long amounts of time and hardly spend any money. It’s really nice to say the least. What’s your daily routine as a boatman? It depends on how many boatmen are there. It was really nice when Saxon, Brandon, and I were all there. That way you just break it up because there are four boats a day that take the guests out to Cloudbreak (a ten minute ride). When it’s like that one guy will take two boats, and the other guys will just do one a day. What’s really cool is that when there’s lots of swell, 90% of the guests surf Restaurants, so we’d all go out to Cloudbreak and radio back to Ro
