Fashion designers need to be artistic and creative, while working with fabric. They should be able to express their ideas in sketches. They may not be brilliant artists but must be able to combine colour, shade and tone in a very original and practical fashion. Being fashion-conscious and highly aware of the constantly changing fashions is a basic requirement. Designers must be good communicators too. Self-employed or freelance designers need to be sharp and talented. An ability to devote long working hours will definitely be an asset and hold you in good stead in the long run.
