What are the qualifications and professional requirements of therapists?
Psychodynamic Counsellors should have trained on a course recognised by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and/or be accredited to practice by BACP. Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists should have trained with an organisation which is a member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) or the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and should be registered with one or both of these organisations. Analysts should have trained with an organisation which is a member of BPC. Anyone who works psychodynamically with people should have had an extensive personal therapy, so that clients are protected from the possibility that the therapist has unconscious desires to control or manipulate the client. They should be in supervision and must continue their professional development with regular attendance at professional seminars/workshops etc. A reputable therapist will give details of training, registration and length/type of experience and will tell the client
