What Are the Purposes of the Network Layer Protocols?
The Network Layer is a name created for the Open Systems Interconnection seven layer model of network protocols. The layering of protocol groups is a concept invented for the TCP/IP protocol stack. This is a more widely used system for networking protocols. In TCP/IP, the network layer is called the Internet Layer. This gives a better description of the responsibilities of these protocols because they work to cross networks, rather than to pass data within a network.
