What are the pros and cons of the new health care bill?
The con is that there is a lot of deliberate misinformation out there. The insurance reform bill does NOT change health care, nor does it permit the government to run health care. It does NOT create a socialist state. It does NOT control who you get care from. The bill provides some regulations for health INSURANCE, so that almost anyone can be covered. And if you can’t afford it, you get assistance. In that way, it will help people who have been dropped from coverage to get coverage again and not suffer or die due to their lack of wealth or insurance. It aspires to the idea that no one should die because they can’t afford care, and no one should go broke because they got sick. The bill also provides significant tax breaks to small businesses who contribute to their employees’ insurance plans. According to the independent Congressional Budget Office, the bill should reduce the amount of money the government spends on health care, in the long run, significantly. The bill allows individu
Pros: ■Everybody can have health insurance if they want it. ■Insurers will not be able to stop paying for people who are sick, even if they lose their jobs. ■People who cannot afford health insurance won’t have to pay as much money. ■People who are already sick will be eligible for healthcare. ■In the long run it will (hopefully) reduce medical costs significantly. Rising medical costs are the main reason the long-term budget projections are so alarming. Something has to be done. Unfortunately, this bill might not do enough. While there will definitely be some savings, it’s not clear that they will be as transformative as hoped. ■Health insurers can no longer cap coverage. In other words, they will no longer say that they have spent enough on you and you’re on your own for the next hundred thousand dollars. This should reduce medical bankruptcy. ■There will be increased competition in the insurance market. It might be from a public option. It might also be from some kind of non-profit,
