What are the pros and cons of modular and slab granite?
Slab granite is sliced pieces from large blocks of stone. Slab granite is the most commonly sold and is available from all stone distributors. Slab granite is sold by the piece or slab, and therefore, necessitates typically buying more than the actual fabricated quantity. For example, a 70 sf kitchen would require a minimum of 2 slabs because slab sizes usually run in the 50-60 sf range. If you multiply the slab pieces by their square footage you arrive at a number in the 100-120 sf total purchased. The fabricator will typically charge this back to the customer as waste because the remaining quantity cannot be used for another job, due to the color and texture of the future purchased slabs not matching. This can significantly raise the cost of the fabrication. Modular stock is purchased in quantities of blanks cut from the same block, and therefore, having a similar color and texture throughout the pieces.
