Liposuction as a generalisation is not available on the NHS as it is deemed a cosmetic procedure. Liposuction is not the answer for being generally overweight. Dieting is the only solution, with regular exercise. What liposuction is good at is removing certain areas of excess fat, for instance around the tummy button, on the hips or on the thighs. It is better in younger patients who have very good skin tone as what we are hoping is that having removed a volume of fat the skin will contract down again, very much like after a pregnancy. Liposuction is not good at making an overall very thick leg thin and certainly has no place in reducing a patient’s weight. If it is undertaken sensibly it is quite safe. Blood transfusion should never be required and I personally limit the amount of fat that I would reduce to just over three litres of fat at one session. This limits the complications. It should, however, be realised that it is difficult to get an overall very smooth reduction of fat and
